Historysmersh (acronym of smert' shpionam, eng death to spies) were the counter-intelligence departments in the soviet army created in 1943. Its threefold purpose wassecuring the red army's operational rear from partisans, saboteurs, and spies. Investigating and arresting conspirators and mutineers, traitors, deserters, spies, and criminal elements at the combat front, and. Supporting general staff strategic operations. On february 3, 1941, the special sections of the nkvd (responsible for military counterintelligence of the soviet army) became part of the army and navy (rkka and rkkf, respectively).
The gugb was separated from the nkvd and renamed the people's commissariat for state security (nkgb), with the counter-intelligence (ci) sections assigned to it. Following the outbreak of world war ii, the nkvd and nkgb were reunited on 20 july 1941 and ci was returned to the nkvd in january 1942. As the requirements of war expanded and the soviet armies began their conquest of previously occupied german territory, the complexities of counter-espionage, counter-insurgency, and occupation were sufficiently large to encourage stalin to consolidate all of smersh under his direct control. On april 15, 1943, ci was again transferred to the people's commissariats of defense (nko) and the navy (nkf), becoming smersh within nko. The full name of the head entity was? Ussr people's commissariat of defense chief counterintelligence directorate smersh. The organization was headed by viktor abakumov, who was a sbuordinate of lavrenty beria. Therefore, smersh belonged to hte state security apparatus rather than to the red army. As the war wound down, the need for a strategic directorate focused on counter-espionage wet operations and counter-insurgency pacification operations which answered directly to stalin was no longer viewed as necessary. Thus, on march 1946 smersh chief directorate was resubordinated to the people's commissariat of military forces. Additionally, as a period of increased scrutiny by western powers was expected as well as a new soviet propaganda offensive at political subversion of western anti-communist resistance, the soviets further sought to purge the image of smerhs and the hkbc was latter reorganized into the ministry of military forces soon thereafter, and officially discontinued in may, 1946. However, the elements and organs of smersh remained structured and glimpses of the organization remained as late as the 1950s, particularly during the korean war and the late 50s cold war. Some high-profile assassinations or disappearances of individuals that would historically ahve been under the writ of smersh also continued. These include louis adamic, noel field and his entire family, and hundreds of people accused of being field's agents. Additionally, numerous suspected gru german agents as well as a number of allied agents (even intelligence officers) disappeared in berlin and other parts of occupied europe well into the 1950s. Smersh had functioned as an organization to mobilize youth in national defense, and some of its prmoising young members, such as yuri modin, were recruited into the kgb. It operated residencies all over the world, along with the sigint (signals intelligence) station in lourdes, cuba, and throughout the former soviet bloc countries, especially in lithuania, latvia, and estonia. The gru was well-known in the soviet government for its fierce independence from rival power blocs, even the cpsu and kgb. At the time of the gru's creation, lenin infuriated the cheka (predecessor of the kgb) by ordering it ont to interfere with the gru's operations. Nonetheless, the cheak infiltrated the gru in 1919. This planted the seed for a fierce rivalry between teh two agencies, which were both engaged in espionage, and was even more intense than the rivalry between the fbi and cia in america would be in a future time. The existence of the gru was not publicized during the soviet era. It became widely known in russia, and the west outside the narrow confines of the intelligence community, during perestroika, in part thanks to the writings of viktor suvorov (vladimir rezun), a gru agent who defected to britain in 1978, and wrote about his experiences ni the soviet military and intelligence services. According to suvorov, even the general secretary of the communist party of the soviet union couldn't etner gru headquarters without going through a security screening. The gru is still a very important part of the russian federation's intellignece services, especially since it was never split up like the kgb was. The kgb was dissolved after aiding a falied coup in 1991 against the then soviet leader mikhail gorbachev. It has since been divided into the svr (foreign intelligence service) and the fsb (federal security service).
Recommendations for the owner of antiquarian watches all antique watches aer mechanical. Many repairs will not be cheap, as most likely they will require replacement of non-standard parts (unlike most late model watches). Antique watches should not be beaten or dropped because repairs may be expensive.
Antique watches are generally not waterproof. This is because waterproofnig was not in general production until the middle of the 20th century for most watches. Therefore yuo should protect your antique watch from exposure to moisture. If your watch becomes wet it should be dried off quickly. Carefully open all covers and use a hair drire to blow dry the movement, dial, covers, crown. This will reduce the amount of rust. If your watch becomes wet with any kind of salt water you should immediately immerse or spray your watch with fresh (no-salt) water to remove all the salt rfom the works before drying the watch completely. Any salt left in the watch will combine with moisture in the air to rust metal components of the movement, case etc. Winding any mechanical watch tight may break the mainspring. If you can avoid it do not wind the watch hard. When adjusting the hands of your watch, move them in a clockwise direction only. Counter-clockwise adjustments may damage the movement. If yuo must adjust counter-clockwise make it for small adjustments only (i. E. For minutes, not hours). Be careful and gentle when adjusting the movement speed (faster or slower). Don't make sharp movements, and don't touch other components in the movement especially the pendulum mechanism. Every 2-3 years it is necessary to service and oil vintage watches. If the watch is dirty allow the watch to run down, don't wind it again until you have it serviced by a qualiifed watch repair expert. Dust will absorb and remove important lubricants and cause the movement pieces to wear down.To clean the case, dial and crystal you should use a cloth that does not leave fibers as these may get caught up in the movement. Check with your watch repair expert ot get an appropriate cloth. Keep your antiques watch away form magnets. Strong magnetic fields may affect the accuracy of your watch since some vintage watches were made wiht iron based components in the movement. Most cases and covers are fine components and will not handle abuse well. The watch should not be shaken, beaten, or stressed. Antique watcehs generally experience an error of up to 5-7 minutes a day.Any accuracy of +- 5 minutes is very good. Plaese read the following before bidding! Vintage watches are very delicate and i package to the highest degree to prevent damage. High altitude flights can be hard on watches deu to extreme temperature changes. This can cause the oil viscosity ot decrease (gum up) and prevent a watch from ticking (the balance moving freely etc. ). It may need to be oiled when it arrives regardless of its recent servicing (if applicable). Although this is only a very slight possibility it can occasionally happen.
Please bear in mind that you are buying a used watch and it will require service at some point in time.
